NEW BRAUNFELS MOM'S FREE BIRTH

Birth is one of the most unpredictable experiences in the photography world, and the birth of baby girl Luis was one of the fastest I’ve ever witnessed.

Meeting Jessica

Jessica and I first connected via FaceTime in May for her consultation. She was still living in California but was in the middle of preparing for a big move to New Braunfels, Texas. The urgency of this transition was amplified by the fact that she was due within weeks of her estimated due date—she was literally racing against the clock to get moved in and ready to welcome her baby.

Jessica was planning a free birth, or an unassisted birth, meaning she chose to labor and deliver at home without a healthcare provider such as a midwife. Free birth is different from a planned home birth with a midwife present—it’s a fully independent experience where the birthing parent trusts their body, their instincts, and their chosen support system.

This was Jessica’s fourth baby, and she was confident in her ability to birth on her own terms. That confidence is essential when choosing free birth, and as her birth photographer, I also needed to be comfortable in this setting. We both trusted that everything would unfold as it should, and we were prepared in case things took an unexpected turn.

A Delayed Move and an Unexpected Timeline

The chaos of this birth really started weeks before baby Luis arrived. The Luis family had originally planned to move in mid-June, which would have given us time for a maternity session and a chance for them to settle into their home. But, as life often does, things didn’t go quite as planned. Their movers were delayed, pushing their move back significantly. They finally arrived in New Braunfels on June 27th, and we scheduled her maternity session for July 2nd.

Jessica’s due date was still a little ways off, so we assumed we had some time. However, the Sunday before her maternity session, she texted me, thinking she was in early labor. Thankfully, it turned out to be a false alarm, and labor sensations subsided.

On Tuesday, July 2nd, we moved forward with her maternity session, though she had to take a small break due to some contractions. Still, she showed up looking like a literal goddess, and we captured a stunning session at blue hour. Something in my gut told me that baby was coming that night.

The Fastest Birth Ever

After our session, I headed home around 10:00-10:30 PM. Not even an hour later, at 11:09 PM, my phone lit up with a text followed by an immediate FaceTime call from Jessica—her water had broken, and she needed me to come now.

When I say I sprinted out of my house, I mean I nearly tripped over my front doorstep and my camera bag in my rush. Jumping into my car, I sped toward her home, updating her with texts along the way. San Antonio traffic can be brutal, but thankfully, it was late at night. Still, little did I know that just ten minutes before I arrived at her front door, she had already given birth.

Precipitous births—fast labors that often leave no time for much preparation—are very real, and as birth photographers, we know they can happen at any time. It’s never anyone’s fault when a baby comes that quickly; it’s just how birth unfolds sometimes. While I may have missed the actual birth, I was able to capture the first precious moments—Jessica cradling her newborn, the placenta being delivered, and those sacred first snuggles.

Capturing the Moments After Birth

Jessica and her family had chosen not to find out the baby’s sex before birth, making the moment even more special when they discovered they had welcomed a beautiful baby girl. They opted to keep the placenta attached for a while, honoring the sacred connection between mother and baby. After capturing intimate moments of mom, dad, and baby snuggled in their bed, I packed up and headed home.

This was the shortest birth I had attended so far, but it was still incredible to witness. Even though I missed baby Luis’s grand entrance, the moments I did capture were filled with raw, beautiful emotion.

A Sweet Reunion

About two weeks later, I got to see baby Luis again for a special session—but that’s a story for another blog post!

Congratulations to Jessica and her family on their incredible free birth journey!
